âHe said what?â Sally shouted the second Lorne revealed what Pickrelâs demands were. âWhat an absolute fucking shit, he is. Not only has he robbed those poor families of their children and is refusing to tell us where theyâre buried, but heâs determined to destroy what little happiness Natalie has probably found since he was banged up. We canât put her through this, we just canât.â
They were having the discussion in Sallyâs office over a cup of coffee. Lorne reclined in her chair and took a sip from her drink. Weary and emotionally wrought after confronting Pickrel at the prison, she sighed heavily. âHeâs the scum of the earth, thereâs no other way to describe the fucker. All the way through the conversation I had to resist the urge to scratch myself, he definitely made my skin bloody crawl. Such a smarmy shit.â
Sally took her hand off her cup and ran her fingers through her hair. âWeâre at an impasse. Heâs revelling in the fact that heâs got us by the short and curlies.â
âYep, I thought the same. Weâre damned if we do and damned if we donât. What a frigging nightmare situation to find ourselves in. What do you suggest I do next?â
After wetting her dry mouth with coffee, Sally shrugged. âYouâre going to have to bow to his demands.â She raised a hand when Lorne opened her mouth to fling an objection her way. âHear me out. All you can do is lay it on the line with Natalie. I think she trusts us. Sheâll appreciate that we wouldnât want to put her through such a traumatic position if there was a way around it. When I had to go to see her, to explain why we had arrested her husband, she broke down, sobbed continually for a good ten minutes before she came up for air. I asked her if she had any inclination that he was a serial killer. She broke down again, as though I was accusing her of harbouring a criminal. I wasnât, not in the slightest, nevertheless, I had to know if heâd even hinted at anything over the years. You know what some killers are like, some of them get a buzz out of speaking about what might be a hypothetical case when what theyâre really talking about is something theyâve been at the centre of over the years.â
âWhat a dreadful position to find herself in, I feel for her. What do you think I should do, go and see her? Call her and discuss it over the phone?â
âNo, donât do the latter. Put it this way, if that was my husband, Iâd want to hear about something like this first-hand and in person. Why donât we call it a night? Go home, jump in the bath, have a nice soak to get the grime of being in the same room as that arsehole off of you and ring her in the morning, first thing.â
Lorne downed the rest of her drink. âAre you going to tell me how you got on today?â
âNope.
